Kawagoe, commonly called Koedo (literally means small Edo) is a castle town where a history-rich townscape welcomes visitors.
Course: Walking tour around Koedo-Kawagoe, with an English-speaking guide, visiting:
“Toki no Kane," (The Bell of Time) a clock tower that rises above the streets lined with historical Kura-style buildings that has been familiar with the public since the beginning of the Edo Period. It is truly a symbol of Kawagoe and is still telling time in the town of Koedo;
“Kashiya Yokocho," penny candy alley where they sell traditional snacks and sweets; and
“Kita-in Temple,” founded in about 850 AD, but rebuilt in the 1600's and after a fire that almost completely destroyed the temple. The third shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa went so far in his support for Kita-in that he removed parts of Edo Castle (the current Imperial Palace in Tokyo) and donated them to the temple.
